Hopefully you will never be faced with a pressing situation where you absolutely have to find a job in one week. If you do, you will definitely be in for a rough ride. However, your organizational skills, initiative, and drive, can very well make such a challenging goal possible. Before anything else, remember, there is no time for wallowing or moping around and feeling depressed. So it’s important not to psyche yourself out, but instead, psyche yourself up. Because the time now is for action, and don’t accept anything else from yourself!
To achieve the biggest bang for your buck, what follows is a schedule outlining a proposed listing of tasks you can implement in one standard week:

SATURDAY
Prepare Your Resume - leave enough room on top of your resume where you generally input objective, so that you can easily retype the title of whatever position you are applying for. Make sure you do a spell check of your resume, and do not go beyond two pages. If you can, keep it to only one page. But a page and a half is acceptable and generally better than two pages. Prepare Your 10/30/60 Second Commercials - When you go to a job interview, think of yourself as a salesperson. You are selling yourself. So each of these commercials must explain why you’re looking for a job, what you’re looking for, and display evidence of how good your abilities are. For example, a ten-second commercial might go like this: “My company just underwent a reduction in force, so I am seeking out another Analyst’s position. My Manager, who has always given me excellent evaluations, told me he never thought I should be let go. But fiscally, he had no say in the matter.” The 30 or 60-second commercial should be more detailed and include information about the kind of job you’re looking for and/or provide more evidence of what you can bring to this new company.

SUNDAY
Get The Sunday Newspaper - Start pursuing the classifieds. Also, within the classified section, look for any possible Job Fairs to attend. Prepare a List of All Your Networking Contacts Who Can Help You - Tomorrow you will start calling all those industry friends & colleagues you have made over the years. So prepare a quick list today and get on the phone tomorrow. Blast Your Resume via Fax - As soon as you finish preparing your resume, send it to a service that can blast fax it Monday morning to hundreds, and at times thousands of companies and or company recruiters. It will generally take a day, but by Tuesday or Wednesday, you should start receiving calls from potential interested employers.

MONDAY
Start Calling or Emailing Your Networking Contacts - Ask your contacts if their company is hiring, or if they know anyone that is. Additionally, ask them if they would accept your resume via email so that they can then forward your resume to any contacts they have. Identify 20 - 30 Employers You Really Would Like To For - Do this on line and proceed to the company websites. See if these companies are hiring and apply. Seek Out On Line Job Posting Services - Since you’re on line already, it’s time to start seeking out companies that post jobs from employers by position and geographic location. Identify any open positions.

TUESDAY
Apply to Any Open Posted Positions - From all of the companies your identified on Monday who had open postings, begin applying now on line. Follow Up With Your Network Contacts - Conduct a brief and polite follow up with your colleagues or contacts. Remember, they have business meetings and may be traveling on business. So in as much as they may or appear to want to help you, you may not be at the top of their list right now.

WEDNESDAY, THURSDAY
Check Your Voice Mail For Any Calls - By today, you should be receiving some calls from the resume blast you sent to the third party resume fax company on Sunday night.

10 Tricky But Legal Complaints Questions - 0

What can you tell me about yourself? I’ve mentioned this question before, and repeat it now because it is probably the number one question you are likely to be asked, and it almost always kicks off the interview. Again, don’t be tempted to go back to childhood and talk about your hardworking parents, your dog, and other trivia. Describe yourself in terms of what the interviewer wants to hear: your work ethic, your skills that apply to this job, your educational background, and other relevant positives.

What is your greatest strength? Overall, this is such a positive question that few people have a problem coming up with an answer. Where they trip up is in not supporting that answer. So if you want to emphasize your people skills, for instance, back it up with a short example of how that translates in the workplace. Then brace yourself for its counter question:

What is your greatest weakness? I talked about this question back in Chapter 5, and mention it here to remind you to choose something that isn’t overly negative. Being a workaholic or a perfectionist or too critical of your own work isn’t necessarily a strike against you. Mention something that is a negative, but do this in a way that turns that weakness into a strength.

What would you like to accomplish during the next ten (or five) years? Talk about what you want to do for that employer, not for yourself. “I’d like to cut production costs by at least 5 percent and find ways to streamline the layout procedure so that we can add publications without adding staff,” is a much better answer than “I’d like to be making 25 percent more in salary and own my own magazine.”

How long have you been looking for another job? Never give an actual timeframe! Casually reply, “Time isn’t a factor because I’m searching for the position that best matches my skills and goals.”

What type of person would you hire for this position? Flashback: You’re casting your ballot for class president and mark the box for your opponent out of modesty. In doing so, you lost then and you’ll lose now if you don’t choose yourself! “I’d hire someone who, beyond a shadow of a doubt, has the skills and people experience to handle this job. I would definitely hire myself.”

Are you willing to take a pay cut from your present position? You aren’t willing to discuss salary yet, so politely say so. “Because we are still in the process of getting to know one another, I’d feel more comfortable talking about salary once we agree on employment” (or something to that effect).

Why do you want to leave your present job? Do not, under any circumstances, complain about your past jobs or employers. Doing so will make you seem negative and appear to be someone who is likely to have problems in a new job. More appropriate answers include this being a step in your career plans or wanting a better job location. “After introducing a more nutritious menu plan to the day care center and establishing a fun yet informative healthy lifestyle program for the after-school crowd, I’ve reached the top of the ladder at this smaller firm. I want the opportunity to use my expertise and continue to grow in a larger organization.” Be prepared to answer why you left all of the jobs listed on your resume.

How do you normally handle criticism? Aah, an easy question if you take it on the chin well. However, most of us aren’t that admirable and we have to put a twist on this common question. “Obviously, criticism comes from not doing the job properly, and I’m eager to correct any mistakes or misunderstandings the minute they arise. I’m grateful to the person who cares enough to help me out in that respect.”

But will you agree that there are quite many candidates meeting the following requirements? How will human resource managers select from all of them? Here your personal and business qualities count. There are some essential features a person should possess to impress the interviewer and get the job.

You should be able to stand your ground. Leadership - Employers hire a young specialist hoping that he has a great potential and in ten years time he will become a leader. Not everyone must be a leader and become a top manager afterwards. But a good manager, that is a person able to handle the organization of other people, is indispensable in any respectable company. Team-commitment – many companies have a project system of management. Several people are working on some project. The success of the project depends on each member of the team. What matters here is your ability to get on with different people, find common language with all the staff and feel like a united team. “One for all and all for one”. In any business a strong team – is a pledge of successful fulfillment of the project. Communication skills are of primary importance for any sphere, as there is no area where we can do without communication. How to make others listen to you, how to present yourself, how to uphold your point of view. This is a mini list of essential communicative skills.

How can the employer know you have all these qualities? You will include them in your resume (e. g. mentioning that at college you were a group monitor and were involved in social activities). Give a brief and precise review of all your successful achievements in your resume. Don’t get upset if you lack some of the qualities. As psychologists state you can develop all of them with the help of special exercises and trainings.

Your Very First Job Search Resume Complaints - 0

So, you’re ready to head into the job marketplace for the first time. If you want to do it right, you should have a job campaign plan. Your job search resume is part of that plan.

Before you do anything, take a long hard look at what you’ve got going for you that would be of interest to an employer. Don’t consider only jobs you’ve had. An employer is much more interested in what you bring to the table that can make a difference going forward . . . not backward.

Don’t think of preparing a resume till you’ve sorted out your strengths capabilities and assets. When you’re ready, here are some general rules for your very first job search resume:

1. Stick to one page and use a simple layout.

2. Create an attention-grabbing headline that alerts the reader to your main strengths and capabilities.

3. Below the headline write an assertive summary statement that establishes the kind of results-oriented qualities you bring to the table. Do NOT write an “objective statement.” Employers could care less what you hope to get out of the job. They want to know how you can make a difference to their organization.

4. Don’t indicate your GPA unless it is 3.5 and above.

5. When you identify your work experience it’s very important to quantify what you’ve done, e.g. “I developed a very successful project on a limited budget. I was able to attract over 300 attendants and realized a profit of $2300.”

6. Be sure to indicate particular skills and training you’ve received, e.g. computer programs, second language fluency, CDL license, wood-working, etc.

7. Identify extra curricular activities that set you apart from the competition, e.g. awards, athletic prowess, volunteer work, tutoring, specialized training, eventful vacations and travel experience, etc.

It’s no secret that an organization’s employment policy is in flux. That’s because career trends are constantly changing.

For example, automation is making more and bigger inroads into employment policy. And you’d better be ready for it.

Automated interviewing is a good example. Your next job search phone call may be from an automated system asking you screening questions. The system will try to determine if you are the right kind of candidate for the job.

Or consider that workplace privacy issues are expected to escalate. Why? A company employment policy can threaten personal privacy.

For instance, were you aware that some companies have started to use surveillance software? This sophisticated software covertly monitors and record each keystroke an employee makes. This includes individual letters, symbols, and punctuation. The data can be saved in a file or transmitted over a corporate computer network.

Ok. Let’s say in a moment of frustration you put together a stinging letter to your boss whom you feel has wronged you. Then, after reading it over a couple times you rethink your decision. Maybe this isn’t such a smart idea after all. So you delete the whole letter.

Too late.

Every word, every letter, every keystroke has been recorded on your hard drive. Or it’s been sent as an email to a computer system administrator who can retrieve it at their convenience.

What does this all mean to your career planning or job search?

If you’re on the job, beware. Find out what your current organization’s employment policy is on this matter so you can make sure your privacy is protected. In other words, understand the corporate rules and play by them.

If, on the other hand, you are offended by this kind of employment policy and you see it as an invasion of your privacy you will want to discover the company’s policy before you accept a position with them. It is not at all inappropriate to ask in advance. This is what intelligent, assertive job search is all about.

An employee’s performance in the workplace is affected by two factors - mental and emotional. A happy employee who enjoys what he does will, as a consequence, perform well. This can even be measured in the bottom-line metrics of the company.

At the very least, a hostile work environment would mean that the employee is not satisfied with the workplace and its work ethos. In such a case, the employee would feel disgruntled towards his employer which may eventually cause a dip in performance and worse still, may lead to him leaving the company.

In what ways does a Hostile Work environment affect the organization?

Providing a safe and secure workplace is one of the company’s major duties to its employees. The company can open the door to negative issues that may cause productivity to take a turn for the worse. For instance, in the case when the company does not have measures to prevent a manager from demanding sexual favors from a subordinate, the company will find itself with a mentally and emotionally upset employee. In turn, this condition will have a negative impact on the employee’s performance.

This is even truer for employees who are particularly productive and who turn out quality work. Being victimized can not only lead to a dip in the employee’s performance, and it can even keep that employee from ever achieving the same level of productivity. Someone who returns from work after an alleged hostile incident may still suffer from more harassment. When such conditions remain unchecked, it will also affect other members of the organization.

How can a company prevent the presence of a Hostile Work Environment?

As we have seen, a Hostile Work Environment is harmful not just to the employee but to the organization as well. As such, the company must ensure that no such environment is in operation at the workplace. The company has to provide its employees with an atmosphere that is conducive to their performance. Termination Under At Will Employment - 0

It can be presumed that majority of the workers in California are “at will” employees. Under this doctrine, employers are given the right to hire and fire an employee anytime they wish without the burden of presenting their reasons for such termination. As well, the employees may leave their posts in a company anytime they want. Yet, there are several exceptions to this rule.

Under the California Labor Code, “at will” employment only apply for those who have not engaged in an oral or written agreement stating that an employee cannot be terminated without any fair basis. The employer then must first provide just reasons before firing his worker. His failure to follow this procedure can give his terminated employee a ground for filing a breach of contract lawsuit against him.

Another thing that nullifies an “at will” employment policy is when there is “implied contract” involved between the employer and his employee. This arises in cases like long-term employment, decent worker’s assessment and salary increases. In addition, if an employer’s statements and actions indicate an assurance to his employee, an immediate termination is considered wrongful if not supported with a good cause.

Bases of Wrongful Termination

It is definitely illegal for employers to terminate workers if they are performing well on their jobs and following all the company policies. However, a number of employers still violate this law provision in many instances such as:

* Employee termination based on age, nationality, sex, religious affiliation or disability

* Employee termination in retaliation for various actions and demands made by the worker

o benefits demand

o wage complaints

o whistle blowing actions

o workplace safety grievances

o other unfair employment practices

Filing a Wrongful Termination Claim

An employee who has been wrongfully terminated from his job has the right to file a claim against his employer with the aid of a qualified termination claim attorney. However, in the process, he has to bear the burden of proof that he is indeed terminated without any good basis at all. Thus, he must present various evidences in form of documents and oral testimonies that will support his case in order for him tom have a better chance of recovery.

If the employee won his case, he may get the following damages from his employer:

* payment for emotional distress

* reimbursement of income lost

* fringe benefits

A lot of times, the amount of satisfaction that one receives in a job is in direct relation to the way they interact with their co-workers. There are McDonald’s employees that are happier then rocket scientists due to their attitude and demeanor while in the workplace. To that end, we’ve assembled some more tips on how to be happy on the job.

- When you first start a job, it can be hard to make the first new connections and friends. A great thing to do that many people tend to avoid is to take the opportunity to chat it up with some of your co-workers over lunch. While you may feel that you’d be less stressed out eating alone or with a friend from outside of work, it can really pay off to get to know your coworkers outside of the job. A lot of times you’ll find out some unique aspects of the person that you wouldn’t have normally seen!

- Keep your complaints about the job to a minimum. While it’s OK to joke about some sort of minor annoyance that occurs on the job, be sure to not have a negative attitude when it comes to the task that you were hired in to do. Coworkers may feel that you are taking your position for granted as well as undermining their happiness in the job, and that’s never a good thing. Keep your workplace criticisms to yourself when you’re getting to know everyone.

- When you get an opportunity to volunteer for some sort of additional task, do your best to take the opportunity. You don’t need to sign up for every task imaginable; co-workers may see you as being a goody two-shoes, but it’s definitely important to show a zest for your job.

- Be sure to keep a positive attitude while at work. Things may happen - not every workplace is jerk-free and you’re bound to make a few mistakes while you’re getting started. Keep your sense of humor about you and realize that the transition to a new job is tough.
